All you need to do is Tap the Data and Storage Usage option on the Settings tab. This Data and Storage Usage screen let you select what type of file is automatically downloaded. You can choose auto-download settings for videos, documents, audio and photos. Tap the type of file you wish to turn off auto-download for.
For each type of files, you will get three options; Never, Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi and Cellular. So in order to turn off auto-download in Whatsapp application, choose the ‘Never’ option for each type of file which you find under Data and Storage Usage.
